This Darjeeling Tour takes you to an enchanting hill town cradled in the Himalayan foothills of India’s West Bengal, fondly retains its legacy as a summer retreat for the British Raj elite. With the grandeur of the majestic Mt. Kanchenjunga – one of the world’s highest peaks – as its eternal backdrop, it’s no wonder that Darjeeling is affectionately hailed as the ‘Queen of the Hills.’

Home to the endearing narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, fondly known as the “Toy Train,” which was masterfully constructed back in 1881, this town remains steeped in rich history. Beyond its natural allure and colonial charm, Darjeeling serves as a cultural melting pot, with vibrant communities cohabitating harmoniously. This cultural amalgamation is palpable in the town’s architecture, festivals, and notably, its cuisine. Darjeeling is globally celebrated for its unique black tea, grown on emerald plantations that stipple the rolling hills around the town. The hill town is also a paradise for shoppers. The bustling bazaars offer everything from Tibetan handicrafts and hand-woven textiles to exquisite silverware and locally made woolens.

Itinerary

Begin your journey with a warm welcome from our representative at the Bagdogra airport/NJP Railway Station, who will arrange your transfer to Darjeeling by private vehicle. Get your first view of the mesmerizing Himalayan landscapes and lush valleys on your drive to Darjeeling, accompanied by the sight of enchanting tea gardens. Once in Darjeeling, check in at a local homestay or hotel. A briefing for the next day's tour will follow. Your afternoon in Darjeeling is yours to explore. After freshening up at your accommodation, make your way to Chowrasta Mall. Here, sit back on one of the peripheral benches to relax and soak up the vibrant ambience or take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque Mall Road. If you arrived in the morning or early afternoon, you would have ample time to venture up the Observatory Hill, located behind the Mall. Visit the renowned Mahakal Temple situated at the hill's summit and bask in the views and sunset. Other nearby attractions include the Nightingale Park and Glenary's, a heritage restaurant and bakery. In the evening, explore the variety of shops around Chowrasta Mall. Then, amble along Nehru Road, which descends from the mall and is flanked by a range of shops. Your day concludes with dinner at your homestay or hotel.

Start your day with a hearty breakfast at your hotel. Arrive at the Darjeeling Railway station to catch the historic "Toy Train," officially known as the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR). This train has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, so prepare to embark on a journey steeped in history and scenic beauty. Begin your 'Joyride' on the Toy Train, a round trip from Darjeeling to Ghum, the highest railway station in India. As you chug along the winding tracks, relish the breathtaking views of the lush tea gardens, picturesque landscapes, and the majestic Kanchenjunga peak. Arrive in Ghoom and take a quick tour of the Ghoom Railway Museum, situated in the same compound as the railway station. Explore the rich history of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, its unique locomotives and carriages, and the important role it played during the British Raj. Board the train to return to Darjeeling by noon and proceed for lunch. After lunch, take a leisurely stroll around the bustling Chowrasta Mall. Visit the iconic Oxford Bookstore, shop for local tea, and try some homemade chocolates from Glenary's. In the late afternoon visit the DHR Exhibition Centre located close to the Darjeeling Railway Station. The Exhibition Centre houses an impressive display of vintage photographs and articles related to the history and heritage of the DHR. As the day winds down, head towards a local café to enjoy a steaming cup of the world-famous Darjeeling tea, accompanied by the breathtaking view of the setting sun.

Begin your day at 3:00 AM with a visit to Tiger Hill (8000 ft) for a unique sunrise view. Witness the Himalayan range, including Kanchenjunga and Mount Everest, bathed in golden hues. Returning, visit Ghoom Monastery, a historic site from 1850, housing a 15-foot Maitreya Buddha statue. After breakfast, proceed to Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, famous for its conservation programs and Himalayan animals like Snow Leopards and Red Pandas. Next, explore the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, established after Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary's historic Everest ascent. Adjacent to it is its museum, displaying artifacts from various expeditions, including personal gear of the 1953 Everest climbers. Also visit the Bengal Natural History Museum, home to a diverse collection of regional wildlife. Post-lunch, visit the Tibetan Refugee Self Help Centre, a haven for 130 Tibetan families providing various services from handicraft training to healthcare. If time allows, a visit to Peace Pagoda is recommended, offering panoramic mountain views and showcasing Buddha's four avatars. Finally, explore the Happy Valley Tea Estate, one of Darjeeling's oldest tea estates, providing employment to over 1500 people. Your day trip ends around 6 PM, when you'll be taken back to your accommodation.

Aloobari Busty and Lamba Dara, located a 30-minute walk from Chowrasta Darjeeling, are villages steeped in mountaineering history. Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, the first Field Director at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), used this trail to train institute members, leading them from HMI to the Rungdung River, Rangay Rung, and up to the top of Tiger Hill. Many who have summited Everest and Kanchenjunga still reside here and continue to work as mountain guides. Post breakfast, we'll set off for our hike at 9 AM, journeying through the villages of Lamba Dara and Aloobari. During this trek, you'll have the chance to observe a variety of flora and fauna as we traverse the Rungdung River, a tributary of the Teesta River. By 12 PM, we will reach Rangay Rung, nestled amid beautiful tea estates, where we'll stop for lunch. After our meal, we continued on foot for about 3 miles. From there, our vehicle will pick you up and transport you back to your hotel or homestay.

If your departure is scheduled in the evening and you leave early, we can arrange a stop at Mirik Lake. After a hearty breakfast, check out from your hotel or homestay, then board your vehicle for Bagdogra Airport/NJP Railway Station. On your return journey via Mirik, enjoy a stopover at Mirik Lake, also known as Sumendu Lake, spanning 1.25 kilometers. Revel in horse riding, boating, or simply enjoy the serene lake views. Your tour concludes upon reaching the airport/railway station for your onward journey, hopefully with a treasure trove of beautiful memories.
